Born into a family of potters in 1958, Chua Soo Kim started training and working for his family's pottery at the age of 12, and where he began his lifelong interest in glaze research. He became a master potter at 15 and has worked as a full-time professional potter and glaze chemist for more than 30 years.


Besides being a master potter and exploring new glaze technology, he also teaches in art schools, secondary schools and conducts pottery classes at his studio. Since 1993, Soo Kim has led Hwi Yoh Ceramic Group, formerly part of Studio 106 (a potters’ club founded by eminent sculptor potter Ng Eng Teng), to promote the art of pottery. The group has organised exhibitions showcasing the works of ceramic artists since 1995.


Soo Kim has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His works are held in various public collections including the Singapore National Museum, NUS Centre for the Arts, Hyatt Hotel, DBS Bank and National Arts Council, among others.

Mostly inspired by nature and environment, Soo Kim’s works include Blue Planet series, Sunset series, Tidal Wave (Tsunami) series, Network series, etc.
